3 Reasons to Use Universal Beams on Your Construction Job

As you plan your construction project, you'll have to choose the right structural supports for the building. While you might need to order some specialist products, universal beams are a good all-around support solution.

These beams are also known as 'I' or 'H' beams. They have a flange on either side with a connecting web in between. This design makes the beam look like the letter I from an upright angle and the letter H from the side.

What are the benefits of using universal beams on your job?

1. Get Extra Strength

Universal beams are designed to be strong. They concentrate weight at their centre and direct tension to the sides. This weight distribution process spreads the load across the beam as a whole.

This even spread ensures that no part of the beam is put under undue stress. The whole beam carries its weight load.

So, the beam shouldn't buckle or break even in builds where it has to bear higher-than-average loads. It has the ability to bend if it needs to without breaking.

These beams also help you build a basic core support structure. If you install universal beams at key points around your structure, then you might be able to reduce the need for other supporting materials in the build. These beams give you extra stability.

Plus, you can rely on universal beams lasting without getting damaged or developing problems. These beams can hold their own in even extreme weather conditions. They don't need chemical treatments and, if you use galvanised products, they won't rust and corrode.

2. Get a Versatile Support Solution

While some of your structural support requires specialist solutions, universal beams will meet a lot of your general needs. These beams are more versatile than some other supports.

For example, you can buy universal beams in a range of sizes and weights. You can customise their internal depths, flange widths and web sizes. You can cut them to size and shape them to fit your specifications.

3. Get a More Cost-Effective Solution

While you need your structural support to be strong, you don't want to spend more than you need to on the infrastructure of your building. Universal beams are a good option here.

You'll typically find that these beams are cost-effective. They aren't solid, so you don't use as much steel in their construction. This lowers your costs.
